Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day at NSW Parliament House

On Wednesday, 26 March 2025, Down Syndrome NSW members, families, and advocates came together at NSW Parliament House for a special afternoon tea celebrating World Down Syndrome Day. Hosted by the Hon. Kate Washington, Minister for Families and Communities, and Minister for Disability Inclusion, the event highlighted the achievements, challenges, and aspirations of people with Down syndrome across all life stages.

The event began with a Welcome to Country facilitated by Daniel McDonald, a proud LGBTQI Gadigal and Wonnarua man living with a disability (hearing impaired). Daniel is also an upcoming visual artist, and his presence set the tone for an afternoon of storytelling, reflection, and advocacy.

This year’s theme focused on the lifelong journey of individuals with Down syndrome and their families, covering early diagnosis and parenthood, school transitions, post-school pathways, adulthood, and ageing. Families shared their personal experiences, celebrating milestones while also shedding light on the evolving landscape of supports and services.

The event featured inspiring stories from:

  • Isabel Ramirez, who spoke about her prenatal and postnatal journey as a mother to her son, Daniel.

  • Ellen Maher and her mother, Claire Maher, who shared their experiences transitioning from school to work.

  • Kylie Scott and her mother, Evelyn Scott, who provided insights into navigating ageing with Down syndrome.

More than just a celebration, this gathering provided a vital platform to raise awareness, advocate for meaningful change, and amplify the voices of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion, opportunity, and community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to this important conversation. Your voices and stories continue to drive change and shape a more inclusive future.
