Our Programs

Our programs, services and supports help create a brighter future for people with Down syndrome.

As individuals with Down syndrome continue to live longer and healthier lives, understanding the unique aspects of ageing becomes increasingly important for families, caregivers, and individuals themselves.

People with Down syndrome experience ageing differently than the general population. While advances in healthcare have significantly improved life expectancy, individuals with Down syndrome may face specific challenges related to:

  • Health Conditions: Such as early-onset Alzheimer's disease, dementia, sensory impairments, and musculoskeletal issues.

  • Social and Emotional Well-being: Changes in social networks, transitioning from parental care to independent living or alternative care arrangements.

  • Financial and Legal Considerations: Including guardianship, financial planning, and accessing appropriate supports and services.

At Down Syndrome NSW, we are dedicated to providing the support and resources needed to ensure a fulfilling and healthy life for older adults with Down syndrome.

General Resources

Video Presentation on Down syndrome and Ageing by Dr Chicoine for Down Syndrome NSW

Dr. Brian Chicoine outlines how adults with Down syndrome are living longer, with life expectancy now around 60, and explains both similarities and differences in their aging process compared to the general population. He reviews common age-related conditions such as cataracts, hearing loss, arthritis, osteoporosis, menopause changes, and especially the high prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease, detailing its causes, symptoms, diagnosis challenges, and emerging treatments under study. He stresses avoiding “diagnostic overshadowing,” addressing reversible issues, and tailoring care strategies. Practical guidance includes communication techniques, environmental adaptations, healthy lifestyle promotion, social engagement, and sensitive end-of-life planning to support wellbeing throughout aging.

Healthy Ageing Resources from DSA and NIB Thrive

With support from nib foundation, Down Syndrome Australia has developed accessible resources to support health ageing for people with Down syndrome. The project is guided by an Ageing Advisory Group of which NSW has been part of, and shaped by the voices of people with Down syndrome, their families and carers.
